While ZMF Headphones and Dan Clark Audio, who started their business with a similar background, have already moved on to manufacturing their own headphone models, Mod House Audio's product range has consisted purely of Argon headphones based on Fostex models, which we reviewed at the time Argon mk3. However, at the end of 2023, Ryan, who runs the company, completed the first Tungsten planar headphones based entirely on his own design after 3 years of development (link to product page). These are sold with two different magnet structures with a 500 dollar price difference. I have the cheaper version, costing about 1800 euros, with single-sided magnets – hence the additional name ”Single Sided” or ”Single Sided Magnets”. The price can be considered high, but for comparison, for example ZMF Caldera -planar headphones cost about double.

Tungsten is a unique headphone for many different reasons. Firstly, the sensitivity of its drivers is the lowest on the market, and the impedance for planar drivers is higher than usual at 135 ohms (155 ohms in the Double Sided version). This makes amplifying the headphones even Hifiman HE-6:ta and Susvara more difficult, if they are to be listened to at high volume. Affordable devices are generally not powerful enough for a 130–150 ohm load, but are optimized for 16–32 ohm impedance. The peculiar amplification requirement in Tungsten is mainly due to the conductors made of 24-carat gold. The drivers are manufactured by Ryan's partner in Britain. The headphone cable also comes from Britain, manufactured by Viking Weave Cables workshop. The structure, in turn, is 3D-printed in the United States, while the ear pads are by ZMF.

Gold planar drivers have always been rare, but Mod House Audio has developed such with its British partner.

If choosing an amplifier causes a bit of a headache, so does the availability of Tungsten. Ryan still assembles the headphones alone, as far as I know, so he only accepts new orders in small batches about once a month. The promised completion time in 2024 was about 6 months, but in reality, some had to wait for their headphones for up to a year. The order also had to be paid for in advance, so it's easy to understand the frustration of enthusiasts, especially since the manufacturer offered hardly any interim information about its operations. The worst delays were apparently due to various production over- and underestimations, health problems of Ryan's close circle, and customization options offered for Tungsten, which the manufacturer later removed from its selection. Orders are also now accepted less frequently than before, which hopefully will speed up the completion of the headphones in 2025.

I myself managed to get my hands on the Tungsten by buying it from another enthusiast 8 months ago. However, writing a Finnish review of the headphones has felt somewhat foolish due to the product's small target audience, so I apologize for the delay to those who would be interested in Tungsten. Since this is a highly hyped product, it will probably be useful to find out how a one-man modding workshop can compete against products from larger companies in the 1500–2000 euro price range.

Packaging and accessories

As for the packaging, it could very well be a ZMF headphone model, which is a compliment from me towards Mod House Audio.

Tungsten immediately creates associations with ZMF products, as both arrive in a sturdy plastic case. This solution is probably also appearance-based, as the cable connector tends to press into the space between the cup and the body of the female connector in the recess unless it is pushed in at precisely the right angle. This angle, in turn, is not the most natural in my opinion, so the process easily becomes fiddly. Others have also rightly pointed out the same thing, but the attachment procedure is not rocket science after a little practice.

Build and comfort

For headphones designed and manufactured by one man, Tungsten looks like a remarkably finished product.

Tungsten visually resembles both Audeze's older LCD headphone series (cups and headband) and ZMF's headphones (headband and height adjustment), but adds its own spice to the mix in terms of materials. Mod House Audio has come up with the idea of attaching the pads with a metal disc to the magnets of the planar drivers. A similar attachment method is used, for example, in Meze Audio's Empyrean headphone series, and it surpasses all competitors in its ease of use. On the other hand, due to the glued-on metal discs, it is not as easy to try different pads with the Tungsten as with ZMF headphones. I would have preferred an even better solution, such as sliding the disc inside the rim of the pad, similar to Verum Audio headphones or Moondrop Para/Cosmo. In the current situation, replacement pads can only be purchased from Mod House Audio. In the Single Sided version of the Tungsten, the standard pads are hybrid-style, while the headphone version with double-sided magnets uses leather pads. The original owner of the headphones had wanted carbon fiber grilles and copper-colored rods and bolts. Nowadays, this is no longer possible, and the headphones are dark gray, with only the color of their grilles being selectable from a few options. With the customizations I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if the manufacturing process has been chaotic with one person running it. Implementing individual unique headphone versions in the middle of a long order queue is by no means sensible, even if the manufacturer were paid extra for it. Fluctuations in air pressure inside the pads practically cause the drivers to temporarily go haywire. For example, opening your mouth or moving the headphones on your head during listening causes short-term volume pumping up and down. Thus, it would be advisable not to talk, eat, or move much during listening.

If this seems significant, I would recommend acquiring the Tungsten implemented with double-sided magnets, which has not been reported to suffer from the same phenomenon. On the other hand, placing small risers under the ear pads would seem to equalize pressure and alleviate volume changes. Mod House Audio can be asked to include metal riser plates with suitable air vents cut into them for this purpose with the order. I myself crafted small cardboard risers between the pads and the cups, which prevent the pad from attaching completely tightly. This is not visible externally, but it ultimately had a surprisingly large impact on the sound quality I experienced.

I have relieved pressure from the front of the drivers with cardboard pieces I crafted myself.

Without the cardboard pieces, I feel a kind of vacuum inside the pads. The change is not really visible in the frequency response, but with larger risers, it would be possible to boost bass reproduction in the same way as in other planar headphones with a low resonant frequency. My own risers do not change the amount of bass, but it also sounds slightly better when the drivers are less pressurized. I consider the headphones to be better overall this way and even dare to claim that they do not function optimally without the risers. The amplifier should also be able to provide a lot of both current and voltage to the headphones, meaning that not all devices optimized for a small impedance load (e.g., 32 ohms) may be sufficient.

For example, when using the loudly outputting Tidal streaming service, a suitable listening volume is still achieved relatively easily even with more moderate amplifiers, but when watching, say, slightly ”quieter” YouTube content, I can turn the potentiometer of the powerful Ferrum Audio OOR amplifier to its maximum setting in High gain mode (Tidal for comparison at 11–12 o'clock). In some situations, the OOR, designed for Hifiman Susvara, is therefore only just enough for the Tungsten. I therefore recommend being cautious of those who say that the headphones work with any device in all use cases. The content listened to and the desired volume will in any case cause variation in evaluations.

I have listened to Tungsten the most with the Ferrum Audio OOR, which also suits the headphones well in terms of its sound signature. Likewise, Cayin iHA-6 it works quite well balanced, and Tidal listening is also possible in an emergency SMSL DL200with devices like :n, if there is no need for high volume. On the other hand, Tungsten is among those headphones that would be really fun to listen to loudly, so the amplifier should have some reserve.

Among my devices, the Topping Centaurus (in OS mode) works best as a DAC with the OOR, before which I was not completely satisfied with Tungsten's treble Schiit Audio Bifrost 2with :lla or SMSL VMV D1SE. The Topping Centaurus & OOR combination, however, makes the high frequencies just right for my taste, so the synergy is likely obvious. I would even argue that Tungsten is a challenging headphone specifically regarding its high frequencies, as they can be quite heavy to listen to at their worst.

Frequency response:

Tungsten's frequency response relative to Harman's target curve from 2018. The measurements represent the average of two channels and multiple measurement instances.

Tungsten, implemented with a single-sided magnetic structure, sounds simultaneously relaxed and warm, and briskly bright. The robustness of the low frequencies somewhat resembles Audeze's older LCD-series planar headphones, while the airy brightness and detail of the reproduction bring Hifiman's planar headphones to mind. The subdued 1–2 kilohertz range and bright treble make Tungsten a fairly typical open-back planar headphone in general, as the same characteristics are familiar in many other competitors' products. In this respect, there are no major surprises, but rather a slightly different variation of a familiar tuning.

If Tungsten is compared to, for example, Hifiman Arya or Ananda, Mod House Audio has managed to tune the sound to be slightly fuller and more relaxed while maintaining a soundstage that feels spacious and airy. Tungsten sounds, especially in the 3–8 kilohertz range, suitably calmer and softer for my taste than many Hifimans. There is also a slight step back from maximum clarity and energy of reproduction compared to headphone models that follow Harman's target curve, especially in the 1–2 kilohertz range. The vocalist also positions themselves slightly further away in the soundstage, so the spacious sense of space draws more attention than the presence of the reproduction. Nevertheless, we are still talking about such a neutral reproduction that my brain does not detect anything obviously unnatural in it.

The bass in the headphones reproduces linearly, positioning its level closer to headphones like ZMF Caldera, SASH Tres (45 ohm), and older Audeze models than Hifimans. The sound thus has a satisfyingly robust body, but otherwise, instead of the quantity of bass, its tightness and clarity draw more attention. Likewise, the Hifiman HE-6, which contains golden conductors, still kicks more physically, but Tungsten's low frequencies also feel excellently dynamic and thus more powerful than their quantity suggests. A more elevated sub-bass might already sound exaggerated compared to other frequency ranges, unless they also changed proportionally.

The two Tungsten versions differ most in their treble. While the high frequencies of the more expensive double-sided model have been described as balanced and non-fatiguing, my single-sided version sounds quite crisp and sparkling above 10 kilohertz. Taming the occasional over-brightness therefore requires, in my opinion, suitable peripheral equipment or some getting used to. The music listened to also naturally affects the final result.

I don't notice significant sibilance in the treble, but an airy hiss and sparkle dominate the reproduction if, for example, cymbals are mixed to be strongly shimmering. This doesn't actually cause listening fatigue for me, but the result could be more refined. On the other hand, when combined with an otherwise relaxed sound, the emphasized airiness often sounds surprisingly smooth, especially with suitable equipment. With the Topping Centaurus & Ferrum Audio OOR combination, I can raise the volume almost limitlessly if I wish, without the treble becoming too sharp or harsh. Tungsten is actually extremely fun to listen to this way, which can even be somewhat dangerous for the sense of hearing.

My listening experience was memorable even on Tungsten's first use, despite some degree of unrefinement. Firstly, the headphones' soundstage is truly transparent and separated, so following individual sounds is extremely easy, and one can almost peek inside the music. Since the upper mid-frequencies don't come at you, I have enough space to observe different aspects. I would describe the result as meticulous, because thanks to the bright treble, the detail is also first-class. All kinds of nuances and effect sounds leaning on the highest frequencies are reproduced effortlessly and energetically. The location of details, however, is not determined as precisely pinpoint as in the best headphones I've heard; instead, the sounds seem to float slightly in the air. This characteristic is likely due, at least in part, to the softened mid-frequencies in the 1–2 kilohertz range.

In addition to the clear separation of sounds, I like a certain raw authenticity in the presentation, which easily gives me goosebumps. In the case of the Hifiman HE-6, the same is caused by the ”snappy” liveliness and intense presence of the reproduction, whereas Tungsten's fuller sound body forms an exciting combination with nuances that energetically pop out from the soundstage. There is power in the reproduction at both macro and micro levels, so the atmosphere is lively. However, such observations are fundamentally completely subjective, so the matter could also be simply summarized by saying that I happen to like Tungsten's sound – at least once I got the peripheral equipment right. Otherwise, I would describe the treble as more fatiguing, and I would not feel that the headphones compete quite as evenly with more refined high-end models in terms of sound. The headphone version with double-sided magnets may therefore be a slightly safer purchase, while mine offers its user more of a challenge.

Let's next take a closer look at a few other planar headphones for comparison.

Comparison: Tungsten vs. Hifiman HE-6 (6 screw)

Prices: 1800 € vs. used 1000–2000 € (original price 1200 USD)

My HE-6's grille has been modded to be more open, and damping material has been removed from underneath it.

The original Hifiman HE-6 still deserves to be mentioned from time to time, because no planar headphone released since has been able to offer a similar style of intense sound. Many speculate this is due to newer planar headphones having thinner diaphragms and conductors not being made of gold like the HE-6. Partially, the matter also comes down to tuning, as the one implemented with gold conductors, Susvara (original model) already sounds quite different from the outset. Using the Tungsten is also clearly more comfortable, as the HE-6's headband is hard and uncomfortable unless separate padding is added. In terms of weight, however, the duo does not differ much from each other.

Gold conducts electricity worse than many other metals, so it's not a big surprise that Tungsten and HE-6, which use it as their conductor material, are less sensitive and harder to drive headphones than usual. However, the HE-6's lower impedance (50 ohm) and higher sensitivity (83.5 dB/mW) no longer seem entirely exceptional figures compared to the Tungsten (135 ohm & 76 dB/mW). One would expect such headphones to be a thing of the past by now, but Mod House Audio ensures that there is still a need for powerful amplifiers. Since the HE-6 offers a slightly more clinical and thinner soundstage, the Tungsten's warmer low frequencies and calmer presence region make listening more relaxed and thus, in the long run, slightly more pleasant. On the other hand, the HE-6”s mid-frequencies are reproduced in a fun, more energetic and present manner, which is especially emphasized with vocalists. The reproduction is generally more aggressive and edgy between 1–1.5 and 3–6 kilohertz, making Mod House Audio's headphones feel downright restrained. Thus, they do not fully replace the HE-6 if someone is specifically looking for an intensely energetic and ”snappy" sound and detail that truly gets under your skin. I argue that the HE-6's presentation is slightly more realistic of the two due to its added sharpness. It also ultimately excites me more.

Amidst all this, however, the Hifiman model's soundstage does not open up as spaciously as with the Tungsten, nor is there as much time left for observing more subtly reproduced details. Mod House Audio's headphones truly excel in this area compared to the HE-6. The sound intensity is lower, but the spatial separation is more precise, and even the highest treble is of higher quality. The HE-6 sounds a bit grainy, and its upper frequencies are softer. The headphones somehow hiss themselves a bit congested, preventing them from keeping all details completely separate from each other. The softness, of course, helps make the HE-6's treble smooth, even though its highest frequencies are often prominently present, similar to the Tungsten.

The Tungsten reproduces bass more fully, but the HE-6's low frequencies still sound more explosive and physical. This isn't explained by the amount of bass, so it's likely at least partly a positive side effect of the energetic presence region. For the same reason, all kinds of drum hits are reproduced more powerfully with the HE-6, and it also feels slightly more dynamic than the Tungsten. The Hifiman model doesn't hold back at all, while the Tungsten is often a tad restrained.

Mod House Audio's headphones ultimately feel like both a partial step forward and a slight weakening if I wanted them to be the new HE-6. Of course, they don't have to be; a slightly more relaxed presentation and a more impressive soundstage are already sufficient strengths, considering that the reproduction is still excellently transparent and dynamic, like the HE-6. The old Hifiman still offers a more memorable listening experience, while the Tungsten could very well be a more mature version of it. Hifiman does not currently have such a headphone model in its selection, so in that respect, the Tungsten, in my opinion, hits a sensible market niche.

Comparison: Tungsten vs. ZMF Caldera

Prices: 1800 € vs. 3500 €

Like the Tungsten, ZMF Caldera is also a planar headphone that has been long in development and aims for a dynamic sound. The ZMF model is made from materials that feel higher quality and features beautiful wooden cups, but its selling price is double that of the Tungsten. Mod House Audio's headphones compete primarily on price. It remains to be seen whether ZMF will eventually bring a more affordable planar model to the market that more people could afford. On the other hand, the Caldera is still far from the 9000 euro Hifiman Susvara Unveiled, so everything is ultimately relative. With ZMF headphones, one often pays for craftsmanship and appearance, not just sound quality.

The Caldera version I own weighs 100 grams more than the Tungsten due to its stabilized wooden cups and white gold-plated metal grilles, but thanks to a better headband, it is still slightly more comfortable to use. The ear pads on both headphones are similar, so no differences are noticeable in that regard. The clamping force of the headband also essentially depends on how tightly the user bends the steel arch for both headphone models, unless it already feels suitable. Thus, comfort can be improved independently if one has the courage.

ZMF attaches its drivers to wooden cups with exceptionally heavy-duty screws.

Amplifying the Caldera is downright child's play compared to the Tungsten, because the headphones work with almost any device due to their reasonable impedance (60 ohm) and relatively high sensitivity (95 dB/mW). The ZMF model sounds warmer in its low frequencies and more colored due to its specific characteristic found between 1–5 kilohertz. My attention is interestingly drawn, however, not to the ”dips” between 1–2 and 3–5 kilohertz, but rather to the energetically protruding range between 2–3 kilohertz. As a result, the Caldera's sound has a certain liveliness that is somewhat lacking in the Tungsten's more relaxed presentation. At its best, the Caldera reproduces a vocalist wonderfully, meaning simultaneously relaxed but bringing out the small nuances of the sound in a present manner. Instruments also amusingly have both robustness and edginess.

The Tungsten does not create as strong a connection to the vocalist, but rather distributes the overall picture more evenly for examination. Its sound is calmer and airier in style. My attention is drawn more to the things happening in the soundstage and the detail of the high frequencies than when listening to the Caldera. I perceive the overall sound as more transparent and in a way more effortless, whereas the Caldera's sound is more focused and comes more sharply at you. Partially, this is due to the ZMF model's slightly splashy and uneven high frequencies, which have a touch of extra energy around 9 kilohertz (not visible in my frequency response measurements). The Tungsten's treble sounds smoother to my ears, although somewhat sibilant due to its emphasized airiness. One gets used to both, but interestingly, I can listen to the Tungsten at a louder volume. In the traditional sense, it is the brighter headphone of the two, but thanks to its evenness, it doesn't quite feel that way.

Regarding bass reproduction, the difference between the two could essentially be summarized as the Caldera being roughly as much more robust and fuller than the Tungsten is compared to the Hifiman HE-6. Mod House Audio's headphones thus reproduce bass more tightly and controlled this time, while the Caldera adds a dynamic headphone-like fullness to it, sounding slightly softer than the Tungsten. One cannot really choose a winner between these two presentation styles, as both have their own advantages. A sub-bass rising in accordance with Harman's target curve would certainly add even more power to the sound, but implementing it with an open-back design is still difficult without adding electronic filters to the signal path.

Ultimately, it is very difficult for me to say which headphone I would prefer more, because when listening to the same songs, I get two equally excellent versions of them, in a way. I actually enjoy equally the Caldera's rich and lively presence and the Tungsten's spacious soundstage and meticulous detail in the high frequencies. Mod House Audio's tuning emphasizes the accuracy of sound separation without significantly coloring the timbre, whereas ZMF has sought a more original result by presenting different frequencies with varying intensity. Despite the significant price difference between the two, I believe the Tungsten competes in the same league as the Caldera in terms of sound quality.

Comparison: Tungsten vs. Meze Empyrean 2

Price: 1800 € vs. 3000 €

Two dark-toned headphones.

As the third planar headphone, I chose for comparison Meze Audio Empyrean 2, which costs about 1200 euros more than the Tungsten, but is also at least that much higher quality in terms of construction. The Tungsten actually amusingly feels a bit like a prototype that a company like Meze Audio could make and then eventually finish into a complete product using better materials. From a usability perspective, this naturally has no significance.

The Tungsten weighs about 50 grams more and clamps tighter on the head. A secure fit is in a way a good thing, but for longer use, I slightly prefer the Empyrean 2 in terms of comfort. I am not sure which Empyrean 2 better represents Meze Audio's goals, but the comparison situation showed my own headphones to be surprisingly similar in frequency response to the Mod House Audio Tungsten. On the other hand, small differences were still found in almost every frequency range, so the pair ultimately sounded quite different.

Regardless of the specific Empyrean 2 unit, its bass and lower midrange frequencies reproduce more robustly than the Tungsten between 60–350 Hz. At the same time, the Empyrean 2's midrange frequencies remain calmer, making it sound softer and, unfortunately, also less clear. The sound feels more distant and subdued in terms of energy level, although its richness is quite a nice feature compared to the Tungsten. The Empyrean 2's treble frequencies, on the other hand, reproduce a bit more balanced, because the Tungsten sparkles and crackles more. Due to this, with Mod House Audio headphones, one might have to invest more in equipment choices.

The Tungsten's more energetic and neutral sound ultimately distinguishes it most clearly from the Empyrean 2. Meze Audio headphones are best suited for relaxed listening, whereas the Tungsten offers a significantly more impressive listening experience, being more dynamic, detailed, and resolving. It also has a more transparent and airy soundstage, while the Empyrean 2 remains somewhat congested due to its midrange tuning, even though its large planar drivers conjure interesting height into the sound image.

Reflecting on the Tungsten's strengths, the Empyrean 2 unfortunately feels quite tame for a flagship headphone, even though it is, to my taste, a clear improvement over the first Empyrean model. On the other hand, it's worth remembering that the second Empyrean 2 I tested offered a more energetic listening experience, so my final remarks are more uncertain than usual this time. From my comparison, it's mainly worth noting that the Tungsten has a more energetic, neutral, and punchier sound, while the Empyrean 2 offers a more robust and calmer sound in its midrange.

Previous comparisons: Tungsten vs. Austrian Audio Composer and HEDDphone Two

The Tungsten, in turn, previously served as a comparison for the Austrian Audio Composer and the HEDDphone Two, so I recommend checking out those articles as well. Realistically speaking, the Tungsten is an excellent headphone, but a terrible product. Due to its non-existent availability, it doesn't really exist at all; it's mainly a thing for a small group of enthusiasts, not even a market disruptor. It's up to Mod House Audio to decide if it will ever manufacture the Tungsten in such a way that it becomes a genuine alternative to other products when someone considers buying new headphones, expecting to receive them within a reasonable time.

Who actually has the patience to wait 12 months or even half a year for a product as simple as headphones, and wants to give 2000 euros to a small one-man company for that long? For the same amount, one can get other good headphones, and during the wait for the Tungsten, it would even be possible to save more money for even more expensive and potentially better headphones. In a year, many manufacturers also manage to release new interesting products, which might remain a dream when money is tied up in the hope that the Tungsten will eventually be produced. Is Mod House Audio just being greedy and selling too many headphones? Another manufacturer might raise the selling price so that supply and demand would meet better.

The situation is very unfortunate, because apart from its poor availability and difficult amplification, the Tungsten is genuinely a headphone that hardly pales in comparison to its significantly more expensive competitors; many might rightly consider it a kind of ”end-game” choice, from which it is difficult to improve by many percentage points in either direction. Above all, the Tungsten offers an impressive listening experience that entices one to pick up the headphones again and again, even if they are a bit rough externally. If someone daring decides to order the headphones after this, I would recommend choosing the more expensive Double Sided version, whose drivers are not disturbed by internal air pressure variations within the earpads. I could add the Tungsten to my wall of fame, but Kuulokenurkka does not award prizes to headphones with almost zero availability.

<figure
